Is He A Man That He Should Lie?
Kerry wanted a sports car on her twenty-ninth birthday and was looking forward to that fateful day. The thought of driving that new car filled her with joy and happiness. However, she was disappointed when she finally learned she could not get the car she so badly wanted.
The major priority, according to her husband, was for them to save up for their dream house. Even though the decision was right based on their priority, she was sad at not getting what she wanted.
Like Kerry, we all get excited with high hopes at the prospect of getting a new car, the dream vacation, dining at our favorite restaurant, especially when it comes as a promise from our families and loved ones. However, like Kerry, we often get disappointed when we do not get what we desperately want due to one reason or another.
In some cases, because our needs are limitless yet, the resources to satisfy these needs are limited, we often tend to satisfy the ones that are more pressing in our lives. That is the essence of human existence. But the same cannot be said about God’s promises.
Unlike man, resources do not limit God. He owns everything in the Universe (Psalm 24:1-2). The psalmist affirms the earth and all there is belongs to Him, which includes among other things human beings.
So while our families and loved ones can and in some cases disappoint us due to limited resources with which to fulfill the promises, God is limitless and so are His promises. His promises are assured; they can be relied on. He is a God who does not change; He is the God of yesterday (retrospective God) the God of today (God of the now) and God forever (God of eternity). How about that for a promise?
God’s promises are guaranteed to be fulfilled, even though it might seem otherwise. We often get frustrated with the ‘waiting game’ and give up easily. Abraham, the ‘father of many nations’ went through similar circumstances. Bible scholars and commentators reveal it took close to twenty-five years for the promise of the ‘destiny child’ Isaac to be born.
Until then, Abraham had to lean on God’s promise through faith, knowing well, “God had the power to do what he has promised” (Romans 4:21). Because He owns the world, which includes us and thus knows what is best for us, He fulfills His promises when the time is right. The promise, we need to know, is for an appointed time.
So, you would ask, when would God’s promise of a job, husband or wife, business and ministry be fulfilled? Well, we do not know when it will be fulfilled. However, what we do know is that even though we do not fully understand the delays, it surely does not mean denial. At the right time, it will surely come to pass.
We do not perform any special duties in order to receive God’s promises. Quite to the contrary, His promises are ours to take. Particularly, His promise of salvation, which is the bedrock of our existence, is free. That is because it is a promise, which is made by grace; not according to any ritual we perform. Ours is to sit back and relax patiently as He works to have them fulfilled. How simple can this be?
If there are any guarantees in our world today, it’s got to be God’s promises. They are assured even in the face of delays. So why don’t you today, switch to God’s promises? Besides, He is not a man that He should lie. It’s your call.
